India Won the First Test Match in Chennai

Chennai, Feb 26 :Team India curtailed Australia's lead in the second innings to 50 runs and knocked off the victory target easily losing opener Sewhag and M Vijay in 11.3 overs after the Aussies were all out for 241 in 93 overs on the fifth and the final day of the first Cricket Test at the M A Chidambaram Stadium here today.

Chateswar Pujaara was not out on 8 off 24 balls and Sachin Tendulkar on 13 with two sixes, off ten balls. Aussie off spinner Nathan Lyon picked up one for 29 and pacer James Pattinson 1 for 13.

The two were the most successful bowlers for the Aussies in the first innings too. This was also the first time that Sachin, who considers Chepauk cricket ground as one of his favourite venues, began an innings in a test match smashing two sixes in succession.

Murali Vijay and Virender Sehwag, who had accounted for three catches in Aussies' second innings in which they collapsed again, the three Indian spinners- Ashwin, Murali (5-95), Harbhajan Singh (2-55) and left armer R Jadeja (3-72) and made a ninth wicket reocvery, opened the second innings and knocked off the first five runs in 1.4 overs Murali, who had failed in the first innings, hit a six off off spinner Nathan Lyon brought on in the second over itself after James Pattinson, who had picked up five wicket sin the first innings, opened the attack and conceded just one run. But the Aussies, fighting a losing battle, as it were, had some reason to smile as Pattinson saw Vijay driving him to mid off where Henriques caught the batsman.

Chateshwar Pujara joined Sehwag at the wicket then. India were 1-16 in three overs, the wicket falling off the last ball of the over. India were 10-1 off four overs. Sehwag hit a delectable boundary off Pattinson as India coasted to 27-1 off five overs, Pujara batting on two. Two runs resulted in the sixth over with Sehwag batting on 15 off 14 balls and steering India to victory. Sehwag moved to 19 off 17 balls with a delectable on drive to to long on fence off Peter Siddle who replaced Pattinson, India were 33-1 after seven overs, 17 short of victory.

Aussie captain Michael Clarke persisted with Lyon who conceded 15 runs in his four overs as India moved to 36-1 in 8 overs. However, the ninth over with Lyon brought on again, brought joy for the Aussies as Sehwag fell edging a turner to Vijay at first slip. As India lost their second wicket for 36 off the second ball of the overs, Sehwag scored 19 off 23 balls with three fours. However, it was all over as Sahcin who joined Pujara out in the middle, hit two sixes off Lyon over covers and jumped to 13 off 5 balls to push India to 59, one run short of the victory.

Pacer Siddle then came on to bowl his second over as the curtain was coming down on what developed into a one sided contest after the Ausies fight back in the first innings when they batted first. Dhoni then swung the test back in India's favour, Eleven overs gone, India needed a run to romp home. Pujara faced as the 12th over began. He edged Lyon to a single past the slip to bring the victory to India. The second Test will be played at Hyderabad from March 2-6 with the Cricket Board ensuring special security for the teams in the wake of the blasts there last week.
