Chennai, Jan 8 : The 'charade' over the date for release of ace actor-director Kamal Hassan's new film 'Viswaroopam' continued with the acclaimed actor asserting that only he would decide on the date.
The actor, who has also directed the film for his home production house Rajkamal Internationals, told newspersons at a press conference following his parleys with Theater Owners Association and Distributors for the last two days, over his decision to premiere the film on DTH platform that "it is my product and no one else can take a decision on this." He said he has decided to postpone the release of the film, originally slated for January 11, due to commercial reasons.
His decision to premier the film on DTH platform on January 10, sparked off strong opposition from theatre owners and distributors who charged that the actor's move would only cut badly into theatrical collections. However, Kamal reiterated today that he would not go back on the decision to preview the movie on DTH platform. He said the postponment of the relaase was only to find a suitable date to release it in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on the same day.
The Los Angeles release of the film has also been put off, he said. However, he would decide on the request of his peers in the industry to release the flick on DTH two days after the theatrical release, he said, emphasising "only I will decide on this." Kamal said he was only doing legitimate business of selling his movie. "I will take legal action on those who threaten and prevent me from releasing the film on DTH platform," he added. Kamal also said the DTH platform was only meant to create a 'a new business model. The industry must only look ahead.'
The Theatre Owner's Association fears that Kamal's move to release 'Viswaroopam' on DTH platform would have a cascading effect with others also following suit. Already ace director Mani Ratnam, according to industry sources, is awaiting the response to DTH release of 'Viswaroopam', having decided to do so with his own new film 'Kadal.
