Tamil film industry folks embark on day-long fast stir on Lanka issue

    

Chennai, Mar 19 :  The Tamil film industry, popularly known as Kollywood, today added to the boil in Tamil Nadu in the form of agitations over the Lankan Tamils issue by embarking on a day-long fast agitation in support of their brethren in the island nation. Various wings of the industry joined the agitation, originally called by Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) and Directors Association President Ameer earlier this weeek.

This included the South Indian Film Artiste's Association and leader of the 'Samathuva Makkal katchi' party and MLA, actor Sarathkumar and his actress wife Radhika and other stars. The tinsel world representatives observed the fast at 'Valluvar Kottam', a memorial for ancient Tamil Saint-poet Thiruvalluvar, a well known land mark in the city.

The Tamil film industry's demand in support of the Lankan Tamils included adoption of the resolution passed in Tamil Nadu assembly by the AIADMK government in 2011 calling for economic blocde of Sri Lanka by the Indian government along with the US sponsored resolution against Lanka for alleged genocide of Tamils in Lanka during the final phase of the Lankan governemnt's war against the LTTE. They also called for efforts by the Centre for declaration of Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapakse as a war criminal and support from it for seperate Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka. The agitation by the film industry came in the midst of students and some Tamil organisations, besides a few political paties embarking on agitations on the Lankan Tamils issue in the form of demonstrations and fast..
