Coimbatore, June 20: City-based noted surgeon Dr C Palanivelu has bagged the prestigious European Association of Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) award for developing a unique technique in laparoscopic food pipe cancer surgery.
The coveted award, carrying a citation and cash of Euro 2,500 (Rs.1.5 lakh), was presented to Palanivelu, Director of Gem Hospital India Pvt Ltd, at the 16th International Congress of EAES held recently at Stockholm, Sweden.
"This is the first time an Indian surgeon has been selected for this award," Palanivelu claimed at a press conference here on Thursday
Of the 350 research and new operative techniques presented at the Congress, six outstanding procedures were selected for award session and thoracolaparoscope esophagectomy (resection of food pipe) for cancer oesophagus, developed by him was unanimously selected as the best, Palanivelu said.
In this method the patient was asked to lie down in prone position (lying face down) for thoracic phase, as opposed to lateral position (lying on the side) practiced by surgeons across the world. This prone position gave excellent exposure to food pipe and ease the dissection in a comfortable manner, he said.
Palanivelu has treated over 300 patients with 100 per cent success rate through this technique which he said was being followed in the U S and Japan.
