Man gets life for killing military doctor

Tiruchirapalli, Oct 29: A lower court here today awarded life sentence to one Muruganandam of Srirangam for murdering a military doctor at Mukkombu tourist spot near here on February 4, 2010.

According to prosecution, the victim Dr Ramesh hailing from Tumkur in Karnataka came here along with his wife and daughter on January 25, 2010 in connection with the recruitment drill at the 117 infantry battalion here. After completing the job, Dr Ramesh and his family were on their way to their native place, and they visited Mukombu tourist spot on February 4, 2010, where the accused Muruganandam attempted to snatch a gold chain from the victim's wife Mrs Anuradha. When she cried for help Dr Ramesh attempted to rescue her wife. Vinod of Ariyalur, associate of the accused, caught the victim's hands and Muruganandam stabbed the victim on his neck and both of them escaped from the scene. The victim died at a private hospital later. Jeeyapuram police registered a case against Murugandam and and Vinod and arrested them on February 26, 2010. When the case was pending before the court, police informed the court that Vinod had died on January 23, 2011.

Principal District and Sessions Judge P Velmurugan in his order observed that the crime against the accused was proved beyond reasonable doubts. The judge awarded life sentence to the accused for the murder and slapped a fine of Rs 1000. If he failed to remit the fine, he would have to undergo six months more imprisonment. The Judge also awarded seven years imprisonment to the accused for the charges against him for snatching the chain from the victim's wife. The sentences could run concurrently, judge said.
