Oppn condemns Govt on lathi charge on Dalit members

Belgaum, Karnataka Dec 12 : Opposition Congress and Janata Dal(S) today came down heavily on the BJP Government in the Legislative Council on police lathi charge on members of a dalit organization in front of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha yesterday.

Members of Madiga Dandora Committee, which is fighting for early implementation of the A J Sadashiva Commission report on reservation in jobs and education to Scheduled Caste people, tried to barge into the secretariat building while some miscreants threw stones leading to police action. Police burst tear gas shells and made a baton charge against the agitators after four policemen including the Superintendent of Police were injured in the stone pelting.

Making his statement after the issue was raised by Congress floor leader S R Patil and Mr Patel Shivram of JD(S) during Zero hour, Home Minister R Ashok said the committee had threatened to lay seige to the secretariat building and tried to break the barricade before the stone pelting began.
