WCC hosts 'Kaivalam'

Chennai Oct 7 : World Crafts Council (WCC), an international NGO working in the craft sector, is hosting Kaivalam, a first of its kind world crafts summit from October 7 to October 10.

According to a press release here today, the summit being organised here is to coincide with its 17th general assembly. WCC is affiliated to UNESCO in a consultative status and has its aegis the five regions namely Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and North America.

The first event of the summit was a Seminar on the theme 'The Future is Handmae' with the participation of dynamic speakers like the renowned Kenya Hara, founder of iconic international brand Muji; Adelia Borges, the leading authority on sustainability of craft from Brazil, Marcella Echavarria, the social entrepreneur and branding expert associated with fashion house Donna Karan; Mr Indrasen Vencatachellum, ex-UNESCO and Jean Francois Lesage, the leading international couture embroiderer, among others.

Another highlight would be Living Legends, an interactive session with craft legends and national treasurers to demonstrate and share their skills. The participants included Remigio Mestas Revilla, the renowned award winning Mexican weaver; Gahaya Links from Rwanda known for the project 'Peace Basket'; Moussa Albaka, the silver artisan from Niger; Zarina with her embroideries from Uzbekistan and George Valris, the famous sequined and beaded vodoun flag artist.

The summit would also see a Crafts Expo with exceptional crafts from member countries; Exim Bank-WCC International Crafts Film Contest for young film makers; an Indian Crafts Baazar with works of 150 artisans. The event was being presented in conjunction with the Office of the Development Commissioner Handicrafts (DCH)- Ministry of Textiles, Ministry of Culture (Government of India), Ganjam Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) and Poompuhar- The Tamil Nadu Handicraft Development Corporation, in their capacity as partners.
