Bidar, Karnataka, Oct 22 : A 108 ft statue of 12th century social reformer Basaveswara will be unveiled by Yoga guru Baba Ram Dev at Basavakalyana on October 28 during the three day 'Kalyana Parva' organised from October 27.
Gulbarga district Zilla Panchayat former Vice-President Suresh Shajjanavar talking to newsmen at Gulbarga said that flowers will be showered on the statue from a helicopter after unveiling the statue. "We have invited guests from various parts of the country and Abroad. Various religious gurus, swamijis, political leaders, and social reformers will take part in this function," he said.
He said former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Union Minister Jaipal Reddy and many Union and State Ministers will be attending the function. It took six years to complete the works on the statue at a cost of Rs five crore including for construction of Basavanna gavi, Akka Mahadevi Gavi, Sharana grama Sharana Haralayya chilume. Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa and Union Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa will participate on the opening day of the function.
The statue which is 24 ft in height, 60 ft length and 80 ft in width, has been installed in a 3 acres of land and visible even from 15 km distance. Another 17 acres of land has been bought attached to the statue where 'Basava Mahamane' mutt has been formed. Statues of contemporaries of social reformer Basavanna Allamprabhu, Channabasavanna, Siddarameshwar and Akkamahadevi statues will also be installed. He said around 4 lakh people are expected to gather on these three days. Special bus facility will be made by the NEKRTC.
