Norms might be tightened in oil companies: CPCL

Chennai, Nov 4: Norms, compliance level and audits might be tightened in depots by oil companies in the wake of the fire disaster at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited depot in Jaipur, a senior official said here today.

"Due to the impact of the fire, there may be tightening of norms, more audits and compliance levels by oil companies", Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (Operations) Director K Balachandran told PTI.

Twelve persons have died in the fire at the depot that broke out on October 28. Eleven huge tanks storing fuel were destroyed in the blaze.

Balachandran said the government may put in place "stronger" regulations and even think of relocating oil depots to isolated areas.

As everyone aware in 2008 CPCL let out the toxic gases to atmosphere during annual maintenance and the entire north madras got affected.Every year 2-3 casualties are happening in CPCL due to poor safety practises.Lot of accident case is pending with Tamil Nadu factory Inspectorate against CPCL in the past.If CPCL is not improved in safety measures what happened in jaipur will be repeated in manali also.
