Belgaum, Dec 11 : Several people were injured when police resorted to lathicharge to disperse members belong to a SC organisation which indulged in stone pelting and also tried to barge into Suvarna Vidhana Soudha where winter session of the Karnataka Legislature is in progress.
The agitators wanted to enter the Soudha and meet Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to demand implementation of A J Sadashiva Inquiry Commission report. Official sources said that members of three organisations including Madiga Dandora Samiti had assembled trouble started when some in the group started pelting stones and Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil was injured on the head. Following the incident of stone pelting and the group went on rampage police burst ten rounds of tear gas shells and cane charged the agitators injuring many of them.
More than 15 vehicles, including four police jeeps, were damaged in the violence. The traffic on busy NH 4 in front of the Soudha came to a halt for some time before it was cleared by the large posse of police. IGP Charan Reddy was camping at the spot. The incident came up for discussion in the Legislative Assembly and Council with Opposition Leader Siddaramaiah calling it as a total failure on part of the government.
"How come police did not have information when such a large group was moving towards Suvarna Vidhana Soudha and no action was taken. This is nothing but failure in maintaining law and order by the government,' he alleged.
