Porayar,Nov 4: Hundi collections at the Lord Saneeswara temple at Tirunallar in Karaikal district, over the past three months has crossed rs 49.82 lakh, a temple offical said today.
The three hundis at the temple are opened once in three months, temple Executive Officer S K Panneerselvam said.
This time the hundis were opened last week and the total collection between August and October, 2009 stood at Rs 49.82 lakhs, which is a record for the temple,he said.
Besides the cash collection, the hundis contained about 80 grams of gold offerings.
As 'Sanipeyarchi' took place during September, a large number of pilgrims thronged the temple.Usually, the three month collection is in the range of Rs 25 to 30 lakh,he said.
During weekends, about a lakh pilgrims throng the temple, temple sources said.
Built during the 7th century AD, the presiding deity of this temple is Darbaranyeeswarar, a manifestation of Lord Siva. Lord Saneeswara is enshrined in a separate 'sannathi' in benign pose and hence is believed to be a granter of boons.
According to legend, King Nala, who was afflicted with numerous problems because of adverse effects of Saturn, took a dip at the temple tank at Thirunallar and worshipped Lord Saneeswara and got relieved of the evil effects.
