Chennai, Feb 9 : Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M Venkaiah Naidu today welcomed hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru but questioned the Union Government on the delay in carrying out Supreme Court order. Mr Naidu said, "The Centre has to explain why there was an inordinate delay in carrying out the order.
" Asked whether the Congress-led UPA Government was acting now with the coming Lok Sabha election in the mind and stave off BJP's allegations that it was soft pedaling terrorism issue Mr Naidu observed, "Perhaps it is policy paralysis." Mr Naidu whatever be its intention the UPA Govt has to clarify the inordinate delay in the execution of Guru.
He alleged that delays in executing the order will boost moral of terrorists. Supreme Court had awarded death sentence to Afjal Guru given by the in 2004. His hanging was scheduled for October 2006, but was stayed after his wife filed a mercy petition. Nine people were killed in the December 2001 parliament attack when five heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists drove into the Parliament complex and opened fire.
