Congress workers celebrate Kasab's hanging

Chennai, Nov 21 : Congress workers in the city today celebrated the execution of lone surviving accused in the 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attacks Ajmal Kasab.

Ajmal Kasab was hanged to death at 0730 hrs today at Yerwadi Prison in Pune. As the news of the execution spread, a group of Congress workers led by Central Chennai Parliamentary Youth Congress President AS Jeevanprashant Kumar assembled in front of the TNCC Headquarters and celebrated by bursting crackers and distributing sweets.

They also shouted slogans hailing the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre for sending a strong message against terrorism by executing the death penalty on the lone surviving accused. Meanwhile, the hanging of Kasab has evoked mixed reactions among political leaders in the State. Vidhuthalai Chiruthiagal Katchi President and Lok Sabha MP Thol Thirumavalavan said there was no second opinion that the peterptator of such a dastardly act should be given exemplary punishment.

"But as far as VCK is concerned, it favours abolishment of death penalty not only in India but elsewhere in the world", he said. Mr Thirumavalavan feared that the hanging of Kasab might open up the possibility of a section demanding the immediate execution of three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case. CPI Leader D Pandian welcomed the execution of Kasab and said it was the right punishment for the mindless killing of hundreds of innocent people.

Tamil Nadu Manithaneya Makkal Kachi M H Jawahirullah, MLA, said the urgency shown by the Centre in hanging Kasab was an attempt to divert the attention at a time when the Government was all set to face the Opposition heat over the FDI issue. He sought to know the urgency shown in rejecting Kasab's clemency plea at a time when several mercy petitions were pending before the President for a long time.

He said though there were no divergent views on Kasab should be given stringent punishment, the issue of death penalty has to be handled cautiously and the party always favoured that no one in India should face the gallows.
