Upamanyu Dutta wins Optimist category in Volvo Regatta

Chennai, Nov 5 Mumbai's Upamanyu Dutta won the Optimist Category, while the Danish pair of Kristian Kirketerp and Mathias Sletten clinched the 29 er division title in the Volvo India International Regatta here today.

On the penultimate day, Dutta started at the middle but worked his way to win the first race under strong waves.

Slightly built sailors had the advantage with the wind dropping intensively but Dutta faced stiffer challenge in the next two races, especially from Singapore's Bernie C Choon.

Dutta sailed a focused race to come first while local Indians Rufus Patrick and Praveen Prabhakar were second and third respectively.

However, it was a forgettable race for Indian girls as Sidra Sabir came seventh, Varsha Gautham ninth, Ekta Yadav 11th, Zephra 12th and Nivedita 14th.
