Thirukumar is not the brother in law of President Mahinda Rajapakse. President Rajapakse's father's brother's grand daughter Nirupama Rajapakse is married to Thirukumar Nadesen, a staunch devotee of Lord Muruga. Thirukumar is from a distinguished tamil hindu family of Jaffna, settled in Colombo for two generations
