Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Oct 27: Sri Lankan Navy reportedly took into custody nine Indian fishermen on the charges of cross border fishing between Katchatheevu Island and Dhanushkodi today.
According to the fishermen who hurriedly returned to the shores this evening, the Sri Lankan Navy patrol vessels encircled three Mechanized fishing trawlers and detained nine fishermen, while the three drivers of the boats were let out. The naval personnel also attacked the crew with iron rods and snapped the fishing nets, before arresting them.
The incarcerated fishermen were later taken to Talaimannar in the island nation for further investigations. Meanwhile, the three drivers of the boat alleged that the Sri Lankan Navy personnel trespassed into Indian waters and arrested the nine fishermen. The arrest of nine fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy has triggered a tense situation in Rameswaram.
Several fishermen associations have urged the Centre to take up the issue with Sri Lanka and ensure immediate release of all the nine fishermen. As many as 632 mechanized fishing boats had ventured into the sea for fishing from Rameswaram jetty this morning.
