'Sports friendly' Jaya govt hikes sponsorship for Chennai Open

Chennai, Nov 10 : The whiff of big time tennis in offing is already blowing in the picturesque Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium here and in time for South Asia's only ATP Tour event Chennai Open to be held in January first week, the Tamil Nadu Government today announced hike in the sponsorship amount to Rs two crore.

The state government has been sanctioning sponsorship to the tune of Rs one crore since 2005 for Chennai Open. An official press release here said the hike in the sponsorship was keeping in tune with the Jayalalithaa Government's objective of encouraging sports development and talented sports persons in Tamil Nadu, to make the state no 1. It may be recalled that it was in 2005 that the ATP Tour event which was first sponsored by ITC as Gold Flake Open and then by the Tata as Tata Open, ran out of sponsorship as the latter pulled out.

The then Tamil Nadu government headed by Ms Jayalalithaa, ensured that the event continued to be held in Chennai and came in as the Platinum sponsor with mobile service provider company, Aircel. Her government also created a consortium of other sponsors, including the Murugappa Group and Indian Bank. Since then, the event is being conducted under the auspices of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDATN) and Tamil Nadu Tennis Association(TNTA). The dates for the 2013 Chennai Open edition are yet to be announced by the organising committee.
