Bangalore, Dec 6 : The top two seeds Sriram Balaji and Sanam Singh took a contrasting route to the semi-finals of the GMIT-ITF Davangere Open International Tennis Championship here today.
Balaji played an authoritative game to beat Dutch player Jeroen Benard 6-2,6-4 in one hour 27 minutes whereas 2nd seed Sanam Singh was tested by youngster Mohit Mayur before closing th match at 6-2,4-6,6-4 in 1hr and 50 minutes. The 3rd and 4th seed Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and V M Ranjith respectively however made their exit. A cool and composed Colin Van Beam from the Netherlands overpowered 3rd seed Jeevan 6-4,6-3 in a clinical fashion and German qualifier Torsten Wietoska prevailed over 4th
seed V M Ranjith 6-3,6-7(11),6-4 in 2hrs and 35 minutes when he won the battle of wits in the prolonged tie breaker in the second set at 13-11. Sanam singh who raised to a easy 6-2 win in the 1st set was rocked by a strong fight back by an aggressive mohit mayur in the second set. Mohit took the set with the break in the 4th game but in the decider sanam singh clawed his way back with an early break (3rd game) and wandered off a dertermined bid by mohit and won at 6-4.
'it was indeed a tough tie and i am glad i won' said Sanam Singh.The match between thorsten and ranjith had lots of fireworks, with both disputing line calls. In fact thorsten received a code violation in the second set. Though Ranjith lost the 1st set he staged a brilliant rally in the 2nd set where he trailed 2-5. He made it 5- all and later won the battle of wits in the prolonged tie breaker which he lost 11-13. Ranjith lost the steam in the decider conceding an early break and stayed on course to win against the big serving german. It would be a rest test of strength for the top 2 seeds against unseeded opponents tomorrow in the semifinals.
The doubles finals however has an all indian line up with the top two seeded pairs reaching the finals.
