CM urges statehood to Pondy

Puducherry,Nov 26 : The All India N R Congress today urged the Centre to grant statehood to Puducherry. Addressing a press conference here after an executive committee meeting of the party here, its president and Chief Minister N Rangasamy said several unanimous resolutions were adopted in the territorial asssembly and forwarded to the centre seeking full statehood for Puducherry,But no action was takern on them.

hence, the centre should take immediate steps to confer full statehood for Puducherry. He also urged all political parties and students to join hands with the governemnt to hold agitations demanding statehood. Stating that the territorial administration was ready to hold local body elctions in the union territory,Mr.Rangasamy said a sum of Rs.270 crore was required to hold the elections.If the centre provides the amount the elections could be held forthwith. The chief minister said that he met the union finance minister and home minsiter in this regard and sought funds from the central governemnt.

However,there was no action from the centre and hence, union minsiter of state for Prime minister's office V Narayansami and Rajya Sabha member P Kannan should press the centre and get the funds. Mr.Rangasamy also urged the centre to waive the loan to the tune of Rs.4020 crores of the union territory.He said that it is becoming very difficult to pay the interest for the amount and hence,the centre should waive the loan in toto.
