Chennai, Dec 13 : Ace Indian players Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri have been given wild cards to the singles main draw of the Chennai Open ATP Tennis tournament to be held here from December 31, 2012 to January six, 2013.
Somdev had a World Ranking of 62 in July and India's top ranked singles player Yuki Bhambri is currently ranked 217. Somdev and Yuki join an impressive field that included four players from the Top 20 in the world. Apart from the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych (World No 6), the grid included Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia (No 9), twice winner Marin Cilic of Croatia (No 15) and Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka (No. 17).
Somdev notched his best run on the ATP World Tour in the 2009 edition when he reached the finals as a wild card entrant and lost to eventual winner Marin Cilic. In 2012, the 27-year-old confirmed his entry but was forced to pull out due to an injury. Twenty-year-old Bhambri defeated Amir Weintraub in straight sets to win the first ever ATP Challenger singles title of his career in Fergana, Uzbekistan on May 20. In the 17th edition of Chennai Open, Yuki shocked Word No 101 Karol Beck. In 2009, Yuki became the first Indian to win the junior Australian Open.
